Why You Should Listen to Music at Work

One of the things I enjoy about working at Rasor Marketing Communications is the collaboration and camaraderie I share with everyone who works here. A perk of working at this Cincinnati public relations agency is the “open floor” plan of our desks that enables me to quickly ask a question or spur a group brainstorm without having to peek around a cubicle and see if someone is available to talk.  However, when I’m on deadline and need to “tune out” from the happenings in the office, I sometimes put on my headphones to listen to my favorite Pandora stations while I work.

A New York Times article, called “The Power of Music, Tapped in a Cubicle,” says that music can actually improve productivity because it helps encourage the release of dopamine in the brain. Basically, dopamine levels are the chemicals that put you in a good mood. In my opinion, it makes sense that happy people would be more productive.

Below are five of my favorite artists for which I’ve created Pandora stations. I’d love to read what others listen to! Leave a comment in the comment section.

  • Hunter Hayes
  • Florence + The Machine
  • Gavin DeGraw
  • John Mayer
  • Keith Urban
